eSIM QR Code Not Working? 9 Fixes That Actually Work

If your eSIM QR code isn't working, the cause is almost always one of nine things — and most of them take under a minute to fix. The three most common by far are scanning the code while the phone has no internet connection, trying to install a code that has already been used, or using a phone that is carrier-locked. Work through the checklist below in order and you'll find the culprit.

Fastest fix to try first: connect to Wi-Fi, restart your phone, and scan the code again. A phone that is offline cannot download the eSIM profile, and this alone explains a large share of failed installs.

Start here: the 60-second checklist

Before you troubleshoot anything specific, confirm all five of these. Each one is a hard requirement — if any is false, the install will fail no matter what else you do.

  • You have a working internet connection. Installing an eSIM downloads a profile from the carrier's server. No connection, no install.
  • Your phone supports eSIM. Check our full eSIM compatibility list or the device compatibility page.
  • Your phone is carrier-unlocked. A phone still locked to a home carrier will refuse third-party eSIM profiles.
  • The code hasn't been used already. An eSIM QR code installs exactly once.
  • Your operating system is reasonably current. Older iOS and Android builds have known eSIM bugs that later updates fixed.

What your exact error message means

Most guides give you generic advice. It's far quicker to start from the literal words on your screen. Find your message below.

Error messageWhat's actually happeningFix
"Unable to Add Cellular Plan" (iPhone) Generic iOS failure — usually no internet, a carrier-locked phone, or a server timeout. Switch to a different Wi-Fi network, restart, retry. Then confirm the phone is unlocked.
"This code is no longer valid" / "Invalid QR code" The profile has already been downloaded, or the code was mistyped when entered manually. Check whether the eSIM is already installed in your settings. If it is, don't rescan — just enable it.
"Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added at This Time" The carrier's provisioning server is busy or temporarily unreachable. Wait 15–30 minutes and retry. This one usually resolves itself.
"eSIM already installed" / "Profile already in use" The install actually succeeded, possibly on an earlier attempt. Go to your SIM settings and turn the line on. Do not attempt a reinstall.
Camera won't recognise the code at all Screen glare, a low-resolution image, or a code displayed too small. Increase screen brightness on the displaying device, or enter the details manually.
Installs fine, then "No Service" Not an install problem — the line is off, roaming is disabled, or you aren't in the coverage area yet. Enable the line, turn on data roaming for it, and set it as the data line.

The nine fixes, in the order worth trying

1. Get on a stable Wi-Fi connection

This is the single biggest cause. Installing an eSIM is a download, not a local operation. Hotel and airport Wi-Fi with captive login portals often block the connection your phone needs. If you're on one, try a mobile hotspot from a travelling companion's phone instead.

2. Restart the phone and try again

Unglamorous, but it clears a stuck cellular subsystem more often than you'd think. Do this before anything more drastic.

3. Check whether the eSIM already installed

Many "invalid code" reports are really "you already installed it." On iPhone, look under Settings → Cellular. On Android, look under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. If your plan is listed, the job is done — you just need to switch it on.

4. Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked

A phone bought on contract or on an instalment plan is frequently locked to the seller's network, and locked phones reject outside eSIM profiles. Your home carrier can confirm the status and usually unlock it once the device is paid off. This is the most common cause that people miss, because nothing in the error message mentions locking.

5. Update your operating system

eSIM handling has been patched repeatedly in both iOS and Android. If you're several versions behind, update and retry before assuming the code is faulty.

6. Enter the activation details manually

Every QR code is just a compact encoding of two text values: an SM-DP+ address and an activation code. If the camera won't cooperate, you can type them in and skip scanning entirely — see the section below.

7. Free up an eSIM slot

Phones store a limited number of eSIM profiles. If yours is full of old travel eSIMs from previous trips, delete one you no longer need and retry. Note that deleting an eSIM is permanent — you can't reinstall it from the same QR code.

8. Turn off any VPN

An active VPN can interfere with reaching the provisioning server, particularly if it routes you through a region the carrier doesn't expect. Disable it for the install, then turn it back on afterwards.

9. Try scanning from a different screen

If you're scanning a code shown on a laptop, raise the brightness and zoom in so the code fills more of the screen. If you're scanning from a printout, make sure it isn't glossy or creased across the code's corner markers.

How to install manually without scanning

Manual entry bypasses the camera completely and works whenever the code itself is valid. Your activation email contains both values you need.

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → Enter Details Manually, then paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code. Apple documents the flow in its iPhone User Guide.
  • Samsung Galaxy: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Enter activation code. Full walkthrough in our Samsung eSIM install guide.
  • Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Download a SIM instead. Google's own dual-SIM help page covers the details.

Copy and paste the values rather than retyping them. A single wrong character in an activation code produces exactly the same "invalid code" error as a genuinely dead code, and it's very easy to confuse a zero with a capital O.

Installed successfully but still no data?

This is a different problem with a different fix, and it catches a lot of travellers on arrival. Check all three:

  • The line is switched on. An installed eSIM sits inactive until you enable it.
  • Data roaming is enabled for the travel line. A travel eSIM connects as a roaming visitor, so with roaming off it will show bars but pass no data. This is the number-one arrival-day mistake.
  • It's set as your mobile data line. If your home SIM is still the data line, your phone will keep trying to use it — and bill you for it.

Also give it a few minutes. On landing, the phone has to find and register with a local network, which isn't instant. If you're comparing your options generally, our breakdown of eSIM vs SIM vs roaming explains why the roaming toggle behaves this way.

When the code really is dead

If you've worked through everything above and it still fails, the profile itself may have been consumed or revoked. This genuinely happens — for example if a first install partially completed, or if the eSIM was deleted from a phone after installing. A QR code cannot be reused after deletion.

At that point, contact whoever sold you the plan and ask for a replacement profile rather than buying again. If you bought from EzSim, our support team can reissue it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same eSIM QR code twice?

No. An eSIM QR code installs a single profile a single time. Once it's downloaded to a phone, the code is spent — even if you later delete the eSIM. If you're changing phones, you need a replacement profile from your provider rather than a rescan.

Why does my eSIM say "No Service" after installing correctly?

Usually because data roaming is switched off for that line, or because you aren't in the destination country yet. A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming visitor, so roaming must be enabled for the travel line specifically. Enable it, set the eSIM as your data line, and restart if it doesn't pick up within a few minutes.

Do I need internet to install an eSIM?

Yes, and this trips up more people than any other single issue. Scanning the QR code triggers a download of the eSIM profile from the carrier's server, so Wi-Fi or an existing data connection is required. This is why you should always install your eSIM before you leave home.

Will an eSIM install on a carrier-locked phone?

No. A phone locked to a specific network will reject third-party eSIM profiles, and the error message it shows rarely mentions locking — which is why this cause is so often missed. Ask your home carrier to unlock the device; most will once the handset is paid off.

Does deleting an eSIM free up the code for reuse?

No. Deleting removes the profile from your phone permanently and does not restore the QR code. Only delete an eSIM you're finished with, and never delete one mid-trip to "start fresh."

Get an eSIM that installs first time

Most activation problems are avoidable: buy before you fly, install on home Wi-Fi, and check compatibility first. EzSim delivers your QR code by email within minutes of purchase, so you have time to install and verify it while you're still somewhere with reliable internet.
